OUR SHELTER GOAL

We still have a ways to go on our $150,000.00 campaign goal!
Our existing building fund had $47,146.00
Since October 2008 we have raised an additional $43,863.00
Which makes our current total $91,009.00, with another $58,991.00 still needed!

A former Albert Lea resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, has offered the Humane Society a grant of $150,000 to help build a shelter. This amount will cover the structure itself, but the Humane Society needs to raise enough money in donations to furnish and complete the interior to meet our needs, which is estimated at an additional $150,000.00. If ground is not broken by June 30, the grant money will go back to the donor

Mission Statement:

The Humane Society of Freeborn County is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to provide the means for the prevention of cruelty to animals, to enforce all laws designated for the protection of animals, to promote responsible pet ownership, to place all adoptable animals into responsible homes and to control overpopulation through community education and spay/neuter programs.

Current Situation:

The HSFC provides veterinary care and finds homes for approximately 50 dogs and cats per year. The HSFC is currently trying to work with the City of Albert Lea on an agreement to work closely together in its operations. We still hold an office at 206 West Clark Street, although we are using the City pound for office hours open to the public on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and holding adoption days twice a month on Saturdays. HSFC operates a multi-purpose service providing care to stray animals and those surrendered by their owners. Injured or sick animals are provided with immediate veterinary care. Stray animals are housed for seven days according to state law to allow owners adequate time to reclaim them. All animals are evaluated, vaccinated, wormed and treated for parasites to prevent transmission of diseases to other animals. Animals not reclaimed will be spayed/neutered and available for adoption after the seven day hold.

Fun Stuff and Facts:

A popular misconception is that dogs age 7 years for each calendar year. In fact, canine aging is much more rapid during the first 2 years of a dog’s life.

After the first 2 years the ratio settles down to 5 to 1 for small and medium breeds. For large breeds the rate is 6 to 1, and for giant breeds the rate is 7 to 1. Thus, at 10 years of age a Great Dane would be 80 years old while a pug would only be 64.
